There are seventeen zones under Indian Railways, and South Central Railway is one among these. This zone was formed back in October of 1966 with Vijayawada and Hubli divisions of the Southern Railway and the Secunderabad and Sholapur divisions of the Central Railway were carved out to form a new zone. Later, Guntakal from the Southern Railway was also merged into South Central Railway in 1977, and during this time Sholapur was again merged into the Central Railway zone.

Divisions of South Central Railway

As of now, South Central zone has six division under it as Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntakal, Guntur and Nanded. South Central Railway operations are now covering the states of new Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. To some extend, some limited portions of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh are also covered by the South Central Railway zone.

As of now, South Central Railway is the second highest revenue generating zones under Indian Railways after Northern Railway. The total revenue from South Central Railway Zone is near about nearly 110 billion yearly.

There are a large number of passenger trains and express trains operated by South Central Railway, offering excellent connectivity. A part of the revenue also comes from the cargo operations South Central Railway is handling by serving to the major industrial corporate in this sector.

The zonal headquarters of South Central Railway zone is at Secunderabad. There are divisional headquarters at Hyderabad, Vijayawadad, Guntur, Guntakal, and Nanded.
