Eastern Railway (ER) is one of the major 17 zones under Indian Railways. The headquarters of Eastern Railway is at Fairlie Place in Kolkata, and the divisions under this zone are Howrah, Sealdah, Malda, and Asansol. Each of the sub-divisions under the zone are headed by the divisional railway managers (DRM). As of late, Eastern Railway is one of the major railway zone in terms of total revenue generation as well as number of passengers and trains handled.
There are three major workshops under Eastern Railway as Liluah, Jamalpur, and Kanchrapara. Jamalpur Workshop is basically for wagon repair and periodic overhaul of the diesel locomotives. Liluah workshop is basically for periodic overhaul of the freight vehicles and Kanchrapara workshop under Eastern Railway is for POH of the electric locomotives and EMU locals.

Eastern Railway Zone
Eastern Railway was established back on 14th April 1952 by incorporating three existing divisions under the East Indian Railways as Asansol, Howrah, and Danapur. The Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) and Sealdah division of Bengal Assam Railway were also added to this newly formed zone. Three more divisions as Mughalsarai, Dhanbad and Malda were also put under Eastern Railway zone later.
Major trains running under Eastern Railway zone are Sealdah - New Jalpaiguri Darjeeling Mail, Sealdah - New Jalpaiguri Padatik Express, Howrah- Ranchi Shatabdi Express, Howrah - New Delhi Rajdhani Express, Howrah - New Delhi Duronto Express, Kalka Mail, Howrah - New Delhi Yuva Express, Poorva Express, Saraighat Express, Farakka Express, Jamalpur - Howrah Express, Bhagirati Express, Hazarduari Express etc.
